Yesterday, when I was adjusting the high speed motor, I imposed upon our neighbor down at the studio, Frank Rodriguez for some tools. Frank is retired Marine Corp. Upon seeing the Leslie with it's American flag draped lower speaker, he began to go patriotic on me. He explained that he had fought for that flag in Viet Nam and that he considered this an act of desecration. Now you have to spend time with Frank, who is a welder, machinist and a family man to understand this stance. You have to love the guy because he has soul and he is the real deal. Upon further discussion, I explained that these devices were used exclusively by the US Army throughout WW II as the instrument of choice for services, i.e., fallen comrades, funeral and pre-general blah, blah, etc.. He chuckled and explained that the Army was nutz. As it turns out, Frank, in his service to our country, was the guy whom his superiors called upon to do many a dirty job. At one point in his career after particularly, "dirty job", Frank refused to go down another rat hole to kill Viet Cong soldiers. So what did his superiors do? They court-martial'ed him, gave him a dishonorable discharge and to this day he has been fighting a system that totally neglected and dishonored his name. This is the type of story that is heart breaking and makes you want to cry. Frank is a sweet guy, with a beautiful son and family. To look at him you would never know that he was anything more than a hard working, Mexican American whom served his county and was not afraid to do the right thing. A true blue collar American hero in my book. In the end, Frank and I laughed about the flag, as flags are meaningless. He was satisfied that the waving of this flag was in honor of the American spirit and Americana in general. A celebration of all that was once good in America. We owe Frank and all of the fallen, including my dad, who made all three WWII invasions, Tunisia, Sicily and Normandy, a debt of gratitude and at the very least, an open ear to their stories, the stories of our independence, no mater how discouraging they may be in reality.
